Set in the near future, our protagonist Rae is living on a nuclear-powered aircraft carrier with the last surviving humans on an earth whose surface is fully submerged in water. The ocean, an omnipresent force throughout the story, continually interacts with their lives, disturbing the peace and toying with their mortality.
Rae only thinks of herself, until an ominous Drone attack almost kills Banks, a father figure to her. While he is in a coma, she discovers his archive containing secrets to the past life of mankind on land.
Will Rae be able to survive political strife among the passengers and the unpredictability of nature? And if she does survive, can she overcome her selfish desires long enough to use the past to save herself and mankind?
In the Aurora Satellite, Zee Dempster has interwoven the concept of the archive with elements of fantasy, politics, military hierarchy, environmental destruction, and drone technology, in subtle ways that challenge the reader to make intellectual decisions about the true meaning of the story.
